A small act of kindness makes a big impact on Nottingham educator
In a demonstration of Collective Greatness, Anita Joshi, a dedicated teacher at Nottingham Elementary, was deeply moved by a note from SBISD Associate Superintendent for Academics Dr. Kristin Craft. This small gratitude has transformed Joshi's teaching methods and inspired a ripple effect of respect and empathy within the classroom and beyond.
A passionate educator with over 17 years of experience, Mrs. Joshi is committed to empowering children through education. During the school year, she goes above and beyond to teach and support students in Spring Branch ISD. Incredibly, during her summers, she spends time in India, supporting children on the autism spectrum who do not have access to mainstream educational systems. As an English as a Second Language (EL) teacher, Mrs. Joshi helps her students in subjects like math and science and provides invaluable strategies to their parents.
In 2016, while visiting Joshi's classroom, Dr. Craft was struck by her exceptional teaching skills. Moved by Mrs. Joshi's unwavering dedication, Dr. Craft took a moment to write a heartfelt note, praising Joshi for her abilities and highlighting the significance of questioning and reflection in effective teaching.
“That note is engraved on my mind, and I read it every year especially when I have a challenging school year,” said Joshi. “It gives me hope and assures me that I am and can be an educator to all children. It reminds me that I can collaborate and overcome challenges and reach as many kids as possible.”
Inspired by the note, Mrs. Joshi began writing personalized notes to her students and their parents, celebrating their strengths, achievements, and moments of growth. This practice fostered a profound connection between teacher and student and led to remarkable positive change.
This summer, after seven years, she decided to reach out to Dr. Craft to express her heartfelt gratitude and share the enduring impact the gesture had. “I wanted to express my gratitude. I wanted her to know that the note she left on my desk was precious. I wanted to thank her because I’ve learned that life is unpredictable, and for every opportunity one has, you must take advantage and express gratitude.”
As Mrs. Joshi continues her teaching journey, she recognizes the remarkable influence of even the smallest acts of gratitude and connection. By honoring the unique value of every individual, Joshi strives to create a learning experience that champions empathy, respect, and kindness.
Small gestures have the potential to create positive change in someone's life. Mrs. Joshi’s experience with a handwritten note, inspiring respect and empathy among students, fellow educators, and the wider community, illustrates the potential impact of a simple act.
