#CollectiveGreatness: A profile of Memorial Basketball Coach and Teacher Jyusef Larry

Jysuef Larry has been inspiring minds and shaping lives at Spring Branch ISD’s Memorial High School as a coach and teacher for more than a decade. With 15 years of teaching experience and 11 years as the girls basketball coach, Larry values building relationships more than his overall won-loss record or team stats. With that approach and building consistent team chemistry and buy-in, he has led the Mustangs to 10 playoff appearances in 11 years. This season, his team made it to the area finals and had a 19-8 record.

What does Collective Greatness mean to you?
Larry: First, collective greatness means taking an inventory of the strengths of those I’m working with. Then, it’s about finding ways to create synergy among the group and prove that we are better working together than we are alone.

What role model has made the most impact on your career, and how have you tried to pay it forward to be an example to others?
Larry: Coach Stan Caffey because he cared about his athletes and the overall health of the school so much. I try to treat my students, co-workers and other members of the school community with that same respect and hopefully, I can have a positive influence on their lives.

Follow the #CollectiveGreatness series throughout the month of February to celebrate Black History Month. Be sure to also look for it to be a source of inspiration and recognition for SBISD employees and students throughout the year. The #CollectiveGreatness series will celebrate a variety of cultures, heritages, organizations and diversity groups that make SBISD so great.

What does Collective Greatness mean? We will surpass expectations. Everyone’s work matters. Diversity makes us stronger.
