Hope Grochmall: From SBISD student to mentor and coach for Every Child

For Hope Grochmall, teaching is more than a paycheck—it’s a personal mission to give back to the community that shaped her, much like many educators in Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD).

A product of SBISD, Grochmall has dedicated 19 years to teaching at various schools within the district, including Woodview Elementary, Spring Branch Middle School, and Memorial High School.

Today, she serves as the campus athletic coordinator and health fitness teacher at Northbrook Middle School.

While her journey reflects a deep commitment to the district, it’s the relationships she’s built that truly stand out.

Many of her former students are now parents, and she’s teaching their children— a testament to the lasting connections she’s forged over the years.

“I had an excellent education growing up in SBISD. I want to make sure these kids have the same, if not better, opportunities than I did,” Grochmall said. “This community gave so much to me, and I feel a responsibility to give back.”

At Northbrook, she combines her passion for health and fitness with a commitment to ensuring her students receive a quality education.

Grochmall‘s mentorship has opened up new horizons for her students. She has taught them about healthy living, the importance of physical activity, and introduced them to various sports, broadening their perspectives and instilling a love for athletics.

In addition to her teaching role, Grochmall coaches football, girls’ basketball, and track and field. She particularly enjoys teaching students how to throw the discus and shot put.

Inspired by Olympic athletes, Hope uses their techniques as a foundation to help her students grasp the basics of discus and shot put. She finds it fulfilling to watch her students improve and gain confidence as they learn new skills.

“Most kids have no clue how to throw a discus or what a shot put even is when they start,” she said. “To see their transformation from week one to week six is both rewarding and fun.”

Hope’s dedication to SBISD extends beyond the classroom. She also serves as an announcer during SBISD football games, ironically alongside Mr. Wayne Schaper, Jr., one of her former ninth-grade teachers.

“Friday night lights are special, but they are made even more special because I get to call the games alongside ‘Mr. Junior’ who became my mentor in high school. He played a huge part in who I am today,” she said.

Grochmall also credits Coach Wichmann, an English teacher who profoundly impacted her life.

“Having strong role models and mentors shaped who I am today— both as a teacher and a person. They taught me the value of connection, guidance, and believing in others, and I strive to pass that on to my students every day,” Grochmall said.

To Grochmall, SBISD is more than just a school district; it’s a family. She cherishes the close-knit community and the support it provides to both students and teachers.

From her beginnings as a student in SBISD to her current role as a mentor and coach, Grochmall embodies the district’s Core Value of Every Child. Her journey illustrates the power of education and the lasting impact of teachers who invest in their students—not just for the present, but for the rest of their lives.
