District statement on canceled field trip

On Monday morning, April 24, 2023, Spring Branch ISD administration received feedback from employees and other adults who attended the Main Street Theater production of James and the Giant Peach. These individuals expressed concern over elements of the performance that were not age-appropriate for elementary students. Their concerns were about movements that could be perceived as suggestive in nature that took place during the performance.

The decision to cancel additional field trips was based on information received and was not influenced by or the result of a parent’s comments regarding the production during Public Comment at the Board of Trustees April Regular Board Meeting on the evening of April 24. Nor was this decision based on the use of cross-gender casting by Main Street Theater.

The district’s responsibility is to ensure that content to which students are exposed during school hours is age appropriate. Given the information the district had and the tight timeline to be responsive to the concerns addressed, the decision was made to err on the side of caution and cancel the upcoming field trips. Our messaging last week did not include specific reference to employees who reached out, given the small number of campuses that had already attended the production and the desire to protect their identity. It is important to us that our employees feel safe to maintain open lines of communication with administrators when and if they have a concern that could potentially impact the well-being of our students.

We understand that members of our community are divided over this decision. Decisions such as this one are not always easy to make and are always made in the best interests of our students.
