Driving the vision forward for Every Child: Richard Hyland

The sun rises early over the Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) Transportation Center during the summer—and so do the people who keep the district rolling.

While students and teachers enjoy a well-deserved break, a dedicated team of transportation professionals works hard to ensure the district is ready for the first day of school. Their efforts reflect the SBISD commitment to Every child. Every way. Every minute. Every day. From training future drivers to fueling the fleet, this summer’s work is more than maintenance—it’s mission-critical. Let’s meet a few of the people working diligently this summer to be ready for Day One of the 2025–26 school year.

A veteran’s steady hand

Few people in SBISD can claim a career as enduring as Richard Hyland’s. With 44 years of service, Hyland has seen thousands of students off to school and back home again. This summer, he continues to drive routes for summer school, supporting students.

“I know what I do matters—not just to the district, but to the students and families,” said Hyland, reflecting on his long tenure in the Transportation Department. “That connection—and the sense of pride in what we do—is what keeps me coming back year after year.”

Hyland sets a strong example for fellow drivers with his tried-and-true skills in managing student behavior and maintaining open communication between families and school staff. He says that patience, attention to detail, and a commitment to customer service and safe driving are essential for every bus driver who serves students, families and the community.

Part-time solution leads to long-term career

Hyland began driving a bus while attending the University of Houston. The morning and afternoon schedule fit well with his academic classes, and the extra income helped during college.

After graduation, he landed a job that didn’t offer health insurance. “I was still driving a bus part time, and my supervisor was supportive and allowed me to continue working at the bus yard so I could have access to benefits,” said Hyland. “What started as a temporary solution turned into a long-term career. I found purpose in the work and the team—and I’ve been here ever since.”

The strong sense of community and support in SBISD is a big part of why Hyland has stayed for decades. “Whether you’re a teacher, driver or part of the support staff, you’re made to feel like part of a team,” he said. To those considering a career in school transportation, Hyland offers this: “You’ll never be rich, but the rewards outweigh the money.”

Family bonds

As employees across SBISD have said many times, the relationships built with coworkers, students, school personnel and community members create lasting, family-like bonds—a reputation the district proudly upholds with every employee, student and family. “It makes this more than just a job; it feels like family,” said Hyland.

Full-circle moment

Many impactful memories come to mind when Hyland reflects on his years in the driver’s seat. One especially meaningful moment came when he was at a pick-up point along his route.

“A mom came up to me and asked if I was Mr. Richard,” said Hyland. “Turns out, I had been her driver too—and now I’m driving her kids.”

Consistent heartbeat

Hyland’s consistency and quiet commitment represent the heartbeat of the Transportation Department—and the kind of institutional knowledge that helps shape a strong district culture. We celebrate the many ways Richard Hyland continues to contribute to the Collective Greatness (one of SBISD’s five Core Values) of the Transportation team and the district.
