Equipped for success

Project School Supplies was more successful than could be imagined during a pandemic.

Organized annually by Spring Branch Education Foundation volunteers, the drive was generously supported by partner donations from two YMCA facilities and $15,000 grants from the Education Foundation of Harris County/Harris County Department of Education and RBC Foundation USA. In addition, donations from individuals continued to stream in.

Thanks to receiving more than $59,000 in donations, elementary and middle school students in SBISD Title 1 schools got the supplies needed for a successful school year.

Yolanda Vasquez, Communities In School of Houston coordinator for Buffalo Creek Elementary, was especially thankful for new headphones. “I will be honest, when I made the wish list last year and asked for 500 headphones, I never imagined I would receive them. I felt like a kid on Christmas morning!”

Project School Supplies provided the following items for 10,200 SBISD students in 18 elementary schools and for more than 4,500 middle school students – about 50% of all students in the district:

1,320 backpacks
5,040 12-packs of pencils
9,455 composition notebooks
1,740 headphones/earbuds
3,435 boxes of tissues
2,320 bottles of hand sanitizers
9,455 boxes of crayons, markers and colored pencils
5,305 glue sticks
plus many other special requests from schools

Project co-chairs Rebecca Fenn and Kristi Robishaw surveyed school needs, ordered supplies and arranged deliveries. They even rented a U-Haul and picked up/delivered donations for partners. The Foundation’s goal for next year is to expand the supply drive to high school students.

Thank you SBEF and community partners for your Collective Greatness on behalf of SBISD students in need.
