Most people might not consider singing in a choir a sport. But for Spring Branch Middle School (SBMS) eighth grader Katelyn Ta, uniting her voice with others is a form of teamwork she has practiced and excelled at since joining the school’s choir program.
“As a choir, we are all one and sing in unison,” said Ta. “I really like working as a team and singing in concerts.”
Like sports, the Fine Arts are a crucial component of student learning and growth. Exposure to and participation in music programs develop self-discipline, time management skills, connections with others, creative expression, and a sense of accomplishment.
“Choir is a team sport, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t star players,” said SBMS choir director Sarah Stagg. “Katelyn Ta shines brightly in everything she does. Her hours of practice at home and leadership in the classroom inspire her classmates to perform better as a choir.”
Blending In
Being part of the SBMS choir has enhanced some of Ta’s Core Characteristics, identified by the Spring Branch ISD community as building blocks to success. Specifically, Ta believes her involvement in the choir has helped her become more Empathetic & Self-Aware, Persistent & Adaptable, and a Communicator & Collaborator.
“I am aware of the voices around me and blend in with others,” said Ta. “I've learned how to communicate with others and work as a team.”
A High Achiever
Ta credits Stagg with teaching her vocal skills and setting high expectations.
“In the spring, she was ranked fifth out of hundreds of middle school girls from multiple districts and earned the honor of performing in the prestigious Region Choir,” Stagg said with pride.
This opportunity opened Ta’s eyes to the rewards of striving for excellence.
“It was a great experience being around people who worked hard to earn their spot in the Region Choir,” Ta said.
Ta-da!
Ta plans to continue singing in choir when she begins the next chapter of her academic journey at Memorial High School (MHS) next year.
“Katelyn’s drive, perseverance, and determination make her a valuable asset to any choir,” Stagg added. “Her kind heart and team attitude make her a good friend and leader.”
The MHS choir will certainly benefit from the addition of Ta’s musical talents. A round of applause for Katelyn.
