Five New Boys & Girls Clubs Will Open in Spring Branch ISD

Five new Boys & Girls Clubs will soon open on the campuses of Spring Branch ISD elementary schools to provide high-quality, after school programs and staffing to reach more students, assist parents, and enhance and expand campus outreach.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston (BGCGH) announced the new, five-school partnership with SBISD in a July 23 news release.

Financial support for these after school programs was made possible through a three-year grant totaling more than $2.4 million, or $825,000 yearly, from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) 21st Century Community Learning Centers program. The new grant will provide a variety of activities and opportunities to more than 1,000 Spring Branch students.

Boys & Girls Clubs now operate at both Buffalo Creek and Housman elementaries, as well as at the Spring Branch Family Development Center. The new after-school programs will open soon at four elementaries and one middle school. They are:

  • Spring Branch Elementary
  • Spring Oaks Middle
  • Treasure Forest Elementary at The Women’s Home
  • Westwood Elementary
  • Woodview Elementary

“Spring Branch ISD thanks the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston for expanding our strong partnership so that 1,000 deserving children will experience high-quality, engaging and safe after-school programming,” SBISD Superintendent Scott R. Muri, Ed.D., said. “We look forward to celebrating our students growing and developing in life-changing ways thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston!”

Kevin R. Hattery, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, said that BGCGH was proud and excited to continue its SBISD partnership and invest even more in the Spring Branch community with the addition of five new clubs, increasing neighborhood Boys & Girls Clubs to eight centers in all.

“The 21st Century  Community Learning Centers grant from TEA will profoundly change Club members’ and families’ lives by offering children a place to be safe and have fun at these five locations in their community,” CEO Hattery said.

The new after-school clubs will give students access to academic enrichment, tutorial services, and a broad array of additional programs and activities, including physical fitness, nutrition, science and the arts.

“The Boys & Girls Club program and staff will be able to partner with Spring Branch Elementary to provide academic and enrichment programs, character development, leadership and intramural sports programs to enhance and expand outreach for our students,” said Principal Lynn Austin.

At Spring Branch Elementary, youth development specialists will help students on reading and math assignments. The program will also provide a safe setting for all eligible students after school, and help many working parents.

“I believe this program will truly assist Spring Branch Elementary in providing a family-friendly partnership conducive to increasing parental involvement in the educational program,” Principal Austin also said.

Woodview Elementary Principal Becky Hagan said the school’s Boys & Girls Club will inspire student and family lifelong learning. “This new program will help us to reach that goal,” she said.

“We are truly thrilled to have a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Houston to provide a highly rated 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school program for our students,” Principal Hagan also said. “Our children will be able to experience exciting enrichment activities that spark their imagination and creativity through STEM, art, music, sprorts, robotics and other course options. A new partnership like this will also provide programming for both parents and our community members.”
