Spring Branch ISD’s four varsity football teams are looking to take their performances on the field to the next level this year. The 2021 season kicked off on August 26. Here’s a preview of what to look out for this year from your favorite teams.

Memorial High School

The Memorial Mustangs return all their top playmakers from the 8-3 squad that finished second in District 17-6A last season. Leading rusher Carson Zahn returns after a stellar year when he rushed for 1,000 rushing and 12 touchdowns, and the outside threat of Kyle Siblik, who averaged 17 yards per reception and caught four TDs, give the Mustangs a chance to be an explosive offense thanks, in part, to blocking up front by senior lineman George Eaubank.

A gritty defensive core led by linebackers senior Bauer Bruce, junior Grayson Lincecum and senior Marshall Bregenzer, looks to keep the momentum going for a dominant showing. Bauer led the team in tackles and sacks last year.

Northbrook High School

The Northbrook Raiders are poised to have a historic season. “There is a lot of youth and energy among the players and coaches that is going to translate into living out our core values of Relentless Intensity and Disciplined Effort,” coach Andres Gomez said.

The Raiders have exciting playmakers on offense, including quarterback Brandon Dillard, and wide receivers Marquell Hannah and Arnez Semien.

The defense is anchored by senior captain defensive lineman Prince Echaverry, linebacker Angel Reyes, and defensive back Ty Wilson.

“We are most proud of our senior class,” Gomez said. “They have faced steep mountains but continue to climb in order to blaze a trail for all future Raiders who will be stepping into their shoes soon.”

Spring Woods High School

The Spring Woods Tigers have 12 returning starters from last season and a promising group of juniors and sophomores. Under the direction of coach Keith Cripps, the Tigers posted their best record since the 2004-05 season, and they look to build off that momentum.

“We have more speed than we have had in many years and a good nucleus of returning linemen,” Cripps said. “We have an opportunity to compete at a higher level than previous years because of our talent.”

The returning linemen are Joey Emerson, Matt Emerson, Isaac Gutierrez, Santiago Sosa, and Adrian Mendoza. Anthony Rodriguez, Isaiah McKnight, Alijah Hall, Israel Itzep, and Cy Cripps represent the returning skill position players.

Stratford High School

With six offensive and six defensive starters returning for the 2021 season, the Stratford Spartans have high hopes for making the playoffs this year. Coach Todd Rankin believes several players from last year’s 10-0 junior varsity team could make an impact.  The Spartans fell just short of the playoffs after posting a 6-4 record and a 4-3 district record.

“This past offseason was vital to address strength, speed, teamwork, and all the foundational pieces needed to reach the next level,” Rankin said.

This year, the Spartans will lean on senior offensive lineman Josh Hyland, senior running back Diego Denson and junior tight end Hawkins Polley to lead an explosive offense. Denson averaged 6.4 yards per carry as a junior. Senior defensive lineman Colin Tenney, junior linebacker Cooper King, and senior safety Anthony Cuhel lead the way for a swarming defense.
