From cupcakes to confidence: Guthrie Center students lead with purpose

What happens when students take what they have learned and use it to make a difference for others? In Spring Branch ISD (SBISD), it looks like leadership in action.

Three Advanced Culinary Arts students at the Guthrie Center are turning technical skills into meaningful impact, while strengthening the very traits that define a T-2-4 Ready Graduate. Through their SkillsUSA Career Pathways Showcase project, they are not only preparing for competition, they are preparing for what comes next.

Learning That Leads

Juniors Morgan Stone, Madison Stone, and Lydia Lane designed Sweet Success: Cupcake Decoration for Fine Motor Skills Development to support younger SBISD students through hands-on learning.

But this project is about more than cupcakes.

It is about stepping into leadership roles, applying real industry skills, and thinking beyond themselves to solve a problem in their community.

From the start, the team demonstrated what it means to be resourceful problem-solvers. They identified a need, built a plan, and executed it quickly, moving from idea to implementation in just a few weeks.

They also showed persistence and adaptability. Working with young students required patience, flexibility, and the ability to adjust in the moment. Not every cupcake turned out the same, and that was part of the learning for everyone involved.

Communicating, Collaborating, Leading

Inside the classroom, the students took on the role of teachers.

They modeled techniques, explained steps, and guided younger students through the process. In doing so, they strengthened their skills as Communicators and Collaborators, learning how to break down complex techniques into simple, clear instruction.

They also built Empathy and Self-awareness.

Working with PreK, first, and second grade students required them to meet learners where they are, encourage effort, and celebrate progress. They learned how to lead with patience and how to create an environment where every student felt successful.

And perhaps most importantly, they showed they are Ethical and Service-minded, designing a project focused on helping others grow, not just on their own success.

From Technical Skill to Career Readiness

As Guthrie Center students, they are already building industry-level expertise.

Through their culinary program, they have earned ServSafe certifications and practiced professional standards in food safety and preparation. In this project, they applied those skills in a real-world setting, setting up sanitized workspaces and managing materials with care and precision.

They also demonstrated they are Academically Prepared, connecting research, data, and observation to support their work and inform their presentation.

This is the difference CTE makes in SBISD.

Students are not just learning skills. They are applying them, leading with them, and building the confidence to step into career pathways with purpose.

A defining moment before what comes next

As they head to present at the state SkillsUSA competition in Corpus Christi, these students are doing more than competing.

They are articulating their thinking, defending their work, and demonstrating how their project aligns with industry, technical, and academic frameworks. They are also creating tools that allow others to replicate their work, extending impact beyond SBISD.

They are on the brink of what comes next, whether that is the workforce, continued education, or leadership opportunities.

And they are ready.

Because of experiences like this, they are leaving SBISD not just with technical skills, but with the Core Characteristics that matter most.

They are prepared.
They are confident.
They are capable of leading.

This is T-2-4 in action.

This is what it means to be future-ready.
