From helicopters to laptops: Tigers explore careers and make connections

At 6:45 a.m., the roar of rotor blades signaled the start of an unforgettable day at Spring Woods High School (SWHS). A DPS helicopter touched down on campus, marking the launch of a unique Career and Technical Education (CTE) Career Exploration Day focused on law enforcement, safety and technology.

By the end of the day, students had explored careers in public safety, taken part in hands-on training sessions and carried home brand-new laptops. The event was made possible through a partnership between Spring Branch ISD (SBISD), AT&T, the DPS Officers Association (DPSOA), the Houston Police Department, state Rep. Lacey Hull’s office and other area law enforcement agencies.

Exploring careers and making connections

Throughout the day, students experienced careers that keep communities safe. From helicopters and mounted patrols to DPS boats and specialized equipment, agencies including the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Houston Police Department showcased the tools, training and teamwork required in the field.

For Sgt. Stephen Woodard, the event was about more than demonstrations. “The key to law enforcement is relationships,” Woodard said. “This event gave us the chance to connect with students and show them that their community stands with them — and their future. I want students to remember: always seize the opportunity. Today is one of many they will have, and I hope they take advantage of them all.”

Expanding opportunities

One of the most memorable moments came when AT&T and partner Human-I-T: Human-I-T | Technology Donations placed laptops into the hands of student participants. Students then joined workshops on cyber safety, digital awareness and responsible online behavior.

As part of the giveaway, AT&T also presented a ceremonial check to DPSOA, highlighting the donation that funded the partnership. DPSOA is now working with partners to expand the initiative to schools across the region.

"AT&T’s commitment is closing the digital divide," said Charles Stein, ATT's Executive Director for External Affairs. "Today, we are honored to present a $20,000 investment in digital literacy training as part of this partnership, as well as laptops for Spring Woods students."

Setting the example

DPSOA President Richard L. Jankovsky III praised the Tigers for leading the way. “Spring Woods is setting the standard with the very first event of its kind,” Jankovsky said. “Our goal, in partnership with AT&T and community leaders, is to grow this program across the region so that more students can benefit from in these same opportunities.”

The event’s importance was reinforced by the presence of Rep. Hull’s office, which thanked the partners for their commitment to students, families and the wider positive community-impact.

"To help our students reach their full potential, it's essential they have the devices and skills necessary to navigate today's world. This partnership is helping to ensure that happens," said Krystal Walker, District Director for State Representative Lacey Hull. "Thank you to these partners."

Connecting students to tomorrow’s careers

From the helicopter’s landing at dawn to the moment students carried home their laptops, one message was clear: when schools, business leaders, law enforcement and community partners come together, the future is wide open for SBISD students.
