Mayar Badi, an 11th grade student at Westchester Academy for International Studies, has received the prestigious Outstanding Individual Award from the Texas Society of Architects for her design of a children's healing facility based in Ukraine.
“This accolade will open doors for networking, internships, and other opportunities that will expand my experience in the field of architecture,” said Badi.
This accolade is part of an annual awards program that recognizes exceptional members, firms, individuals, and organizations for their achievements in support of the architectural profession. As a state component of the American Institute of Architects, the Texas Society of Architects is one of the largest organizations for the architectural profession in the nation, with 18 regional components and over 7,200 members.
“All second- and third-year students in the Architectural Design course at Guthrie participate in this competition, and I was particularly excited for the creative freedom it offered” said Badi.
Badi’s passion for architecture was sparked by her mother at a young age. During her sophomore year she enrolled in Architectural Design at SBISD’s Guthrie Center, the district’s centralized campus for Career and Technical Education (CTE) instruction. Badi credits recognition to dedication, hard work and the guidance and support of her instructors, Mr. Martinez and Mr. Loutfi.
She is grateful for the dedication her teachers have shown students. “They are always prioritizing the interests of their students, providing guidance, support and valuable resources.”
Badi encourages fellow students to pursue their passions, not be afraid to take new opportunities, and immerse themselves in the career field in which they are interested.
“Success means being able to use my architectural designs to make a positive impact on the community and beyond,” said Badi. Her future plans include attending an architectural school, earning a degree, and pursuing a career as an architect.
In addition to her impressive list of current projects, including a design competition for a library at the new Guthrie Center, her potential for growth is undeniable. Her pursuits have provided her with a solid foundation for success, offering numerous opportunities for a bright future. By preparing for a career in architecture, Badi is not only ensuring her readiness but also creating a path for T-2-4 success.
SBISD offers over 26 CTE programs of study. CTE is an essential component of the district's vision for T-2-4 for Every Child, ensuring that students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for success in college, career, and life. View Badi's winning presentation here.
