The Drowsy Chaperone at Spring Woods High

Opening night for the Tony Award-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone is Friday, Jan. 25, at Spring Woods High School. A special “Cookies with the Cast” reception is planned after the first performance.

The musical recounts the story of a Broadway fanatic called The Man in the Chair who seeks to end his own sadness by listening to a recording of a fictional 1928 musical comedy. Playing the record, a song-and-dance cast from the recording suddenly appears to the fan.

The Spring Woods High School Safari Players will perform this funny musical-within-a-comedy offering seven times, including matinee performances. Show dates and times: Jan. 25-26, Jan. 28, and Feb. 2, all shows begin at 7:30 pm. Matinees: Jan. 26 and Feb. 2 at 2:30 p.m., and Feb. 1 at 4 p.m.

My Fair Lady at Memorial High

Memorial Theatre students will present the famous musical, My Fair Lady, which has been billed by Broadway professionals as “the perfect musical.” The seven-show production is the second offering presented in the high school troupe’s yearlong calendar known as The Artisan Collection.

My Fair Lady is based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. It tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes her speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins to improve her class standing. The original Broadway show starred Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews, and the 1956 Broadway show set records for longest run at the time.

Memorial High’s student actors and technicians, more than 100 students strong, will perform shows Jan. 31 through Feb. 2, and also Feb. 7-9, all at 7:30 p.m. A matinee performance will be held Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, guests may shop in the special Covent Garden Market and buy trinkets or order flowers for their favorite cast member. A VIP Room will be back by popular demand. On Feb. 9, a special Eliza in the Flower Market and Meet the Cast meeting and a reception will be held.

Newsies at Stratford High

Fans of Broadway musicals will be delighted when a production of Newsies opens at the Stratford High Playhouse on Jan. 31. Playhouse productions will all be presented Feb. 1-2 and Feb. 7-9, all shows start at 7:30 p.m. Two separate matinees at 2:30 p.m. will be held on Feb. 2 and again on Feb. 9.

Based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, this Disney musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebel newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from New York City. After publishing magnate Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack and his fellow “newsies” take action.

Helped by a local reporter, all New York City soon beholds the power of the small, but mighty army of newsboys.
