Honor Our Local Veterans

The 18th annual Veterans Day Celebration at Spring Forest Middle School will be observed this year on Friday, Nov. 9. Local veterans and their families are invited to attend both an early morning breakfast and patriotic campus program.

Since its first year, this celebration of U.S. military veterans and their families has become one of the biggest community events of its kind held across west Houston. More than 100 area veterans and family members are expected to attend this year’s program. Spring Forest Middle School is located at 14240 Memorial Drive.

The event will begin with an 8 a.m. veterans-family breakfast followed by a 9 a.m. patriotic assembly and program in the school gym, including student music as well as a special guest speaker, Army Lt. Col. Sean Sculley, a history professor at West Point Military Academy in New York.

Lt. Col. Sculley is a graduate of Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, and has served in the U.S. Army since 1995.

Another planned event highlight will be an appearance by trained service dogs for disabled veterans and handlers from the Patriot Paws Service Dogs group based in Rockwall, Texas, and from Texas A&M University in College Station. During the past four years, Spring Forest Middle has raised more than $32,000 for this group.

This year, a check for $6,700 will be presented to the veteran service organization from the middle school. According to its website, Patriot Paws has now placed 72 service dogs with disabled men and women nationwide with a higher than average placement success rate of 60 percent.

Several community sponsors now support this annual event. All local veterans and their families are encouraged to RSVP. Please email or phone Spring Forest’s Jana Gwinn at jana.gwinn@springbranchisd.com or call 713-251-4618.

Several other campus Veterans Day observances are planned at separate campuses across Spring Branch ISD. Date and time information for small campus events are usually shared through neighborhood campus and community networks.
