Housman Elementary’s multifaceted showcase

During a recent after-hours open house, art show, and health fair, greeters at the front door of Housman Elementary warmly welcomed families from the neighborhood.

The event showcased the school environment, displayed student art, offered fun activities with the health fitness staff in the gym, and provided an opportunity for community partners to share information about their services at tables in the main hallway.

According to Principal Lindy Robertson, families of students at the Lion Lane School for Early Learning were also invited to the open house for a preview of Housman Elementary.

Teachers were in their classrooms, allowing current students and families to stop by for informal visits.

“I like this school,” said a parent of a second and fourth grader who transferred to Housman after the closure of Treasure Forest Elementary last year. “It is nicely kept, and they have high standards for the kids. The kids seem to like it.”

Parents and Kids Running Around in the Gym

In the gym, the health fitness staff partnered with personnel from Warren-T Fitness to encourage parents and kids to play active games together, such as shadow tag. The kids enjoyed seeing their parents run around the gym with them, resulting in lots of laughter from kids and adults alike.

Warren-T held a raffle for a free month of membership, using the event to spread the word about their kids’ classes, especially those offered on school holidays.

The newest member of the Housman health fitness team, teacher and coach Bernardo Cisneros, welcomed the opportunity to meet parents and for them to get to know him better.

“I like that parents and students are getting involved together in the gym,” Cisneros said of the open house activities. “Even just having a few families attend is a success to me. I want them to know we are here for them.”

Judging by the noise and laughter in the gym, everyone had a good time. Casey, a second grader, said his favorite activity at the open house was running races in the gym.

Hardworking Artists

Art teacher Hayley Ballard created a student art display in the main hallway, featuring first-time watercolors with wax resist from crayons, self-portraits by kindergarteners, and imaginative interpretations of cupcakes—some of which had animal ears and faces to become cupcake characters.

“I didn’t know they were going to do that,” Ballard said of the cupcake assignment. “It was a nice surprise.”

“I picked art from students who I knew had put in a lot of hard work,” she said. Invitations to the open house and art display were sent to families of the artists.

“It made the kids feel so special to have their artwork chosen for display,” Ballard said. “They were like, ‘We were chosen!’”

Ballard said she rotates the art display throughout the year, ensuring most students are represented on the wall at some point.

“I was happy my art got chosen because everyone can see my art and what I was going for,” said fourth-grader Aleena about her farm scene at sunset. She was accompanied at the open house by her older sister, Aubrey, an eighth grader, and their mom, Diane, both of whom also attended Housman Elementary.

A Welcoming Community

Thank you to all the families who came to Housman Elementary for the open house and health fair, and to the school staff for making them feel included and welcome.

Together, we are better!
