Recently, SBISD's Westchester Academy for International Studies (WAIS) hosted its annual IB Personal Project Pitch Panels, celebrating the capstone of students' hard work in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
This signature event serves as a capstone experience for MYP students, showcasing their dedication, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Set in the WAIS Media Center, students presented their project ideas to a diverse panel of educators, former principals, and district leaders.
The IB MYP is a rigorous academic framework that encourages students to tackle real-world issues, equipping them with essential skills in critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving—key tools for success both in and out of the classroom.
Over two days, students showcased their projects, received invaluable feedback, and refined their presentations. This hands-on experience aligns with the Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Graduate, reinforcing SBISD’s vision of preparing Every Child for life after high school.
Whether pursuing technical training or two- or four-year college degrees, students emerge well-equipped for the academic and career challenges ahead. Approximately 50 panelists, including community members, district staff, and local business leaders, contributed their insights to guide the students.
Standout presentations included:
- Regenerative planting design as a strategy for combating climate change in the Houston area
- The effects of poverty on student populations and educational outcomes
- The relationship between state testing models and socio-economic factors
- The parallels between literature and comic books in storytelling and the humanities
On Day 1, students presented their initial ideas and received thoughtful, constructive feedback from the panel. By Day 2, they returned with significantly refined projects, demonstrating the improvements made based on this guidance.
A special thanks to all the volunteers and panelists whose insights were invaluable in guiding our students through this pivotal learning experience. This event not only highlights the hard work of our students and staff but also underscores SBISD’s commitment to fostering student growth and preparing Every Child for future success.
