We are writing to update you on the status of our district facilities and operations and to address concerns we know you have in the aftermath of Thursday’s extreme weather event.
Our teams have been working around the clock on assessment, recovery and repair of our facilities, and our senior staff is meeting throughout the weekend for system updates. As of this afternoon approximately 80 percent of our schools do not have power.
In addition to the need for power to be restored, our ability to reopen our schools is dependent on many factors including, but not limited to, the review of our mechanical systems, HVAC systems, plumbing, phone systems, technology, and food service. These reviews cannot occur until power is restored. We also have a significant number of staff members across the area who have been impacted by the storm and understand many families remain without power as of this afternoon.
FOR HIGH SCHOOL FAMILIES:
For our high school families, please know we are aware of your concerns about finals and graduation. We assure you that our teachers will work with their students and will ensure no student is penalized as a result of these extenuating circumstances.
Students who missed AP® exams will have the opportunity to make them up next week.
As of now, our graduation schedule is on track for next weekend as planned.
HOW WE WILL CONTINUE TO COMMUNICATE:
The district will communicate our next update by 6:00 p.m. tomorrow (Sunday). Please continue to monitor the district website, social media channels, email, text messages and callouts for information.
Our thoughts remain with all of our families and staff at this time. Your safety and well-being are our top priority, today and always. We will operate with grace for all as we continue to work through the aftermath of this storm.
Take care,
SBISD Communications
