Special Gift of $11,000 Presented to Support Students and Faculty

In a show of support for local education, KHOU 11 News teamed up with Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) to adopt Thornwood Elementary School for the 2024-2025 school year. The partnership promises to benefit the school’s students and faculty in a variety of ways, from volunteer efforts to the donation of valuable resources.

This week, KHOU representatives made a surprise visit to the school, where they met with students, staff, and Principal Sandra Houston. The highlight of the visit was a special check presentation, during which Principal Houston was presented with a generous $11,000 grant from the TEGNA Foundation, a corporate foundation sponsored by KHOU 11’s parent company, TEGNA Inc. This funding will go directly toward resources and programming designed to enrich the educational experience for Thornwood’s students, supporting the school’s mission to inspire Every Child to learn and grow beyond their expectations.

“We are so grateful for this amazing partnership with KHOU,” said Principal Sandra Houston. “This donation will have an immediate and lasting impact on our students. It is exciting to know that our school is being supported by such dedicated organizations that believe in our mission to inspire every student to achieve greatness. We look forward to seeing how this generosity will help our Tigers succeed both in and out of the classroom.”

Thornwood Elementary, located in the heart of SBISD, is known for its commitment to creating a safe, kind, and empowering environment for its students. Every day, the school’s faculty and staff work tirelessly to ensure that every student is set up for success with a "Strong Start" each morning.

“We are thrilled to partner with Thornwood Elementary,” said David Loving, president and general manager at KHOU. “We believe in the power of community, and this is a great example of how local organizations can come together to support our next generation of leaders. We look forward to seeing how this collaboration benefits the students and the incredible faculty who are helping to shape their futures.”

The partnership will continue throughout the year with various volunteer opportunities and additional support. Keep an eye out for a special video feature on KHOU showcasing the school’s mission and the exciting work happening at Thornwood Elementary.

Principal Sandra Houston, along with Assistant Principal Joanne Lim, expressed their gratitude and excitement about the positive impact this partnership will have on their students. "With this support from KHOU, we’re one step closer to making our T-2-4 vision for our students a reality," said Houston.

With this new partnership, it’s shaping up to be the best year yet for the school and its community of Thornwood Tigers!
