Kristen Luciano: A driving force behind SBISD’s technology infrastructure

Kristen Luciano’s role may be behind the scenes, but her daily work is crucial in ensuring Spring Branch Independent School District’s (SBISD) technology infrastructure is in top-notch shape. Her efforts directly impact the students' learning experience, making it more engaging and effective.

Kristen is one of three bond project leads within the district’s Technology Services department. In her role, she consults on new school construction projects to ensure that all technology meets SBISD standards. She’s been instrumental in the recent 2017 Bond projects for Memorial Drive Elementary and the soon-to-be-constructed Guthrie Center, working closely with SBISD's Planning and Construction department to bring the technological blueprints to life.

“To see something go from a concept on paper to a fully functional school is rewarding,” said Kristen. “My role is one that many people don’t realize exists, but it is crucial to ensuring our schools are equipped with the right technology.”

She also manages some of the district’s most critical technology initiatives, including the Employee Lifecycle Device Refresh, which replaced employee laptops, and the Elementary Digital Expansion, which provided every third, fourth, and fifth graders across the district with a Chromebook.

“Tech literacy is incredibly important to me,” said Kristen, her passion for technology evident in her words. “As I watch my nieces learn and grow, I want them and every student to have access to the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.”

Kristen’s time at SBISD began in May of 2019 when she began her role as a Customer Service Engineer at the district’s technology help desk. In this position, she provided remote support to students and staff, handling everything from troubleshooting issues to content filtering management. However, her job responsibilities quickly shifted with the onset of the COVID-10 pandemic.

“When the pandemic hit, everything changed overnight,” said Kristen. “All of a sudden, everyone had to rely on technology in ways we couldn’t have imagined. My first big project was helping to implement Zoom across the district, which was a huge undertaking and learning curve for everyone. But seeing how quickly SBISD could adapt and keep students connected during the uncertain time was fulfilling.”

In 2021, Kristen transitioned to a more hands-on role in technology distribution center operations before being promoted to her current position as Bond Project Lead, a testament to her hard work and dedication.

“Our entire department works hard behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly,” said Kristen.

Speaking to Kristen, it is evident that she is passionate about every project she undertakes. Her leadership and vision have helped SBISD’s bond programs deliver the technological resources necessary for student success.

“The district bond programs are a great way for our community to get involved and ensure our students have what they need,” said Kristen.

Kristen serves as a powerful reminder of technology's critical role in education and the dedicated professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all possible.

Through her efforts and those of her colleagues, SBISD will continue to provide students with the resources they need to succeed, ensuring the district remains on the cutting edge of education in Houston.
