The Agriculture Education Committee Rodeo Roundup Creativity Contest also yielded some winners, with Juho Cheon from Rummel Creek Elementary, and Samantha Sandoval and Amely Garcia from Pine Shadows Elementary all receiving blue ribbons for their exceptional contributions.

SBISD Literacy Art Trail

Every March during spring break, the SBISD Literacy Art Trail provides students with a platform to showcase their artwork to their families. The latest edition of the Literacy Art Trail including more than 20 stops throughout the district. During their visit to the participating campuses, families and students got to experience student art installations and could also scan a QR code to listen to a read-aloud of the book that inspired them.

At Hunters Creek Elementary (HCE), the students started working on their art piece in early March, and the excitement among them was palpable. The book "Perfect" by Max Amato inspired the students, and they chose to create a visual story featuring a pencil and eraser that go on adventures, documenting their travels on Polaroid photos. Each student was given a chance to design their own paper Polaroid using paper, a pencil, an eraser, and colored pencils. Uniquely, the students first filled their paper Polaroids with pencil before using the eraser to create shapes and lines. The artwork depicts the pencil and eraser traveling to various locations, such as the beach and space. You can see selections from the SBISD Art and Literacy Trail on Saturday, April 6th at Create Fest!

Around Campus Activities

Youth Art Month is being celebrated at various campuses, including Memorial Middle School (MMS), where art teachers are taking a hands-on approach to teaching. The photography and art students at MMS collaborated to create self-portraits in the chiaroscuro style. The photography students learned to use light and shadow to create the illusion of light on the subjects in the photographs, who were their fellow art students. These photographs were then used as inspiration for the art students' self-portraits. On March 7, known as Big Art Day, the two groups of students exchanged artist trading cards.

Save the date! Join SBISD Visual Arts for these upcoming events:

SBISD has an exciting array of upcoming events that cater to both students and families. Among these is Create Fest, an art festival hosted by SBISD Visual Arts that seeks to provide a platform for art students, families, community members and businesses to explore the diverse offerings of SBISD Visual Arts. (Saturday April 6th 10am-2pm at Westchester Academy for International Studies) Create Fest fosters competition in creative arts, showcases student artwork in a professional and public setting, and promotes connections with local artists and vendors while celebrating the visual arts.

Another noteworthy event taking place in April is the annual SBISD Art Car Shimmy, organized by SBISD Visual Arts. A smaller version of Houston's Art Car Parade, this event is an avenue for celebrating creativity through art and for artists from across Houston to display their unique culture and imagination. In last year's Art Car Shimmy, over 30 decorated cars visited 15 schools, and students voted for their favorite car at each stop, awarding the owner a trophy.
