Memorial High School sees bond project progress

A lot of moving parts are coming together at Memorial High School in Spring Branch ISD.

A three-story classroom addition is the centerpiece of the phased transformation of the campus. The new wing is scheduled to open in late 2021 to accommodate rising enrollment at the school that first opened in 1962.

This project and the system upgrades in several of the other wings of the school are part of the $898.4 million bond program approved by 80 percent of the vote in 2017.

“The Memorial High School campus has been a vast family of buildings since it first opened its doors in 1962,” school principal Lisa Weir said. “This dynamic school has grown and changed in appearance, but the heart and soul of our campus life has remained consistent.”

As soon as school was out in May 2021, furniture and supplies from four of the existing MHS classroom wings were moved to be stored in the cafeteria over the summer. In these classrooms, building system upgrades were installed from May to July.

The emptied classrooms gave the MHS custodial crew the ability to do complete re-waxing of the floors so they are shiny and clean for the new school year.

By mid-July (ahead of schedule), the carefully labeled furnishings were moved back into classrooms, ready for teachers to get settled before the first day of school, August 16.

The parking lot and lighting at the front of the school also are receiving a total revamp over the summer, including an impressive new front driveway on Echo Lane.

A new cafeteria is scheduled for the school as part of its phased Bond 2017 updates.

“We are excited about the renovations and the new additions to our ‘family,’ and the ways their contributions will add to Memorial High School’s legacy of excellence,” Weir said.
