Mustangs ready for Friday Nights: Coach Haack leads a new chapter

A new era with Coach Brooks Haack

The lights will shine bright on Friday nights this fall at Memorial High School (MHS), where a new chapter begins under the leadership of Head Football Coach and Campus Athletic Director Brooks Haack. Though it’s his first season with the Mustangs, Haack brings nearly a decade of coaching and teaching experience, and he’s determined to instill toughness, discipline, and leadership into a program with deep tradition.

“I want people to know when they play us, they’re going to get a physical, disciplined ball game,” Haack said. “We’ll be exactly where we need to be on every play, and we’ll play for each other.”

Building more than athletes

For Haack, football is about more than wins and losses. He emphasizes leadership, accountability, and brotherhood. Players are encouraged to “speak life, speak positivity,” and avoid what Haack calls “energy vampires.”

“The weight room and X’s and O’s are important,” Haack said. “But at the end of the day, we’ve got to be good teammates. When adversity hits, I want these kids to know they can lean on each other.”

Each week, players will set offensive, defensive, and special teams goals. On Mondays, the team will celebrate accomplishments—whether it’s a touchdown under the Friday night lights or the unsung effort of a scout team member in practice.

Players to watch

Memorial fans will recognize familiar faces in key roles this fall.

  • Offensive Line Leaders: Returning standouts Devin Jagassar, Colton Bash, Jake Sanchez, and Evan Paul will anchor the line, joined by talented young players ready to step in.
  • Playmakers on Offense: Look for sparks from Grant SperandioDillion Norris, and Miles Goebel, along with two-sport athlete Halen Heinze and receiver Aye Omotosho.
  • Defensive Standouts: Linebacker Isaac Richardson is a name to know—“he just pops off the tape,” Haack said. Seniors John Kafka and Jackson Van Wei will provide leadership on defense.
  • Rising Contributors: Watch for Winston Xu and others hungry to make their mark this season.

Leadership by example

Captains at Memorial aren’t simply appointed—they earn the role through a Leadership Academy led by Haack. The process involves early mornings, late nights, and honest conversations about what it means to lead both on and off the field.

“To be a leader, you have to walk it and talk it—not just on the field, but in the classroom and in the community,” Haack said. “That’s why we put such value on this process.”

Ultimately, the team votes on its captains, ensuring that leadership reflects peer respect and trust.

The Texas Way: Sportsmanship first

In SBISD, athletics are guided by the Texas Way—a commitment to sportsmanship, integrity, and respect for the game. Coach Haack is eager to champion this philosophy forward.

“When you wear Memorial on your chest, people know who you are,” he said. “Representing our community with pride and class is just as important as what happens on the scoreboard.”

Looking ahead

Coach Haack acknowledges the challenge of stepping into the role after a legendary leader of 30-plus years, but he’s energized by the community’s support.

“I’m super fired up,” he said. “The support from our staff, our principal, and the athletic department has been incredible. Our kids are hungry, and I think we’re going to give the community something to be proud of.”
