Middle school students SHINE at prestigious STEM camp

This summer, a group of Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) middle school students embarked on a learning adventure at Rice University's prestigious Tapia Camp.

Representing Landrum MiddleSpring Woods MiddleNorthbrook Middle and Spring Oaks Middle, students were selected for their achievements in STEM clubs and after-school programs throughout the 2023-2024 school year.

Tapia Camp, held at Rice University, offers rising eighth through 12th graders a chance to live and learn like university students, engaging deeply in STEM projects while experiencing college life.

Students collaborated with peers from across the globe to tackle complex STEM challenges during their week of learning. They harnessed skills in coding, modeling, data analysis and the engineering design process to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems. The culmination of their efforts was a final presentation day, where students showcased their projects to an audience that included family members and esteemed faculty.

“This experience has been incredibly enriching for our students,” said Rhoda Goldberg, director of science. “Not only did they enhance their technical skills, but they also developed a greater understanding of higher education and potential career paths.”

Families of the participating students were visibly proud as they attended the final presentations, celebrating their children’s achievements and impressive work.

As SBISD continues to emphasize the importance of STEM education, Tapia Camp highlights the district's commitment to preparing students for a bright and innovative future.
