Murphy Oil Company: A Good Neighbor sparking curiosity

Murphy Oil Corporation, a global independent exploration and oil company headquartered in Spring Branch, is helping ignite potential in students at Edgewood Elementary (EWE) through the Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) Good Neighbor program.

The company first partnered with SBISD through the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Since then, the relationship has grown into a meaningful part of Murphy Oil’s community mission.

“We wholeheartedly believe that lasting change begins where people live and work,” said Meena Palanivelu, vice president of sustainability for Murphy Oil.

One of the primary ways Murphy Oil supports students at Edgewood is by investing in activities that promote science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Employees introduce students to possibilities in the energy sector and related fields. Each year, Murphy Oil hosts an annual STEAM field trip for Edgewood fifth graders. During the hands-on experience, students explore various disciplines within the oil and natural gas industry and hear directly from employees about their career journeys.

“We strive to share real-world experiences that inspire curiosity in young learners, spark meaningful conversations, and help children envision what’s possible for their future careers,”  Palanivelu said.

Murphy Oil also supports Edgewood’s classroom reading initiatives and STAAR testing efforts, ensuring the company’s involvement benefits students, teachers and the broader school community. Programs evolve each year to meet campus needs.

Through its participation in the Good Neighbor program, Murphy Oil has seen how even small actions can create lasting change.

“We’ve seen firsthand that small gestures can inspire curiosity, build relationships, and leave a lasting impression on young learners,”  Palanivelu said.

Now in its fourth year partnering with SBISD, Murphy Oil is committed to refining its support to serve the school community more deeply. The company also looks forward to a new collaboration with the Houston Astros Foundation that will further strengthen student opportunities and community ties.

“Through our partnership and others, we hope SBISD will continue to thrive through a range of opportunities and a shared commitment to success, ensuring Every Child receives the resources, mentorship and hands-on experiences they need to dream big and reach their goals,”  Palanivelu said.

When asked to describe the SBISD experience in one word, Palanivelu chose “impactful,” reflecting how both students and Murphy employees are inspired to envision a future full of possibilities.
