Mustang Cross Country targets district crown

Celebrating the Season: As the 2025 cross country season comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to look back and celebrate the incredible dedication, teamwork, and school spirit shown by our SBISD athletes. From early-morning runs to championship finishes, these teams exemplified what it means to compete with heart and represent their schools with pride.

Mustang Cross Country chased district title with senior leadership

For Head Boys Track and Cross Country Coach DePree Roquemore, the 2025 season at Memorial High School (MHS) was about senior leadership, relentless work ethic, and bringing home a district championship.

“Our seniors have really set the tone,” Roquemore said. “Since I came in, they’ve been committed to raising the standard, working harder, and pulling everyone else along. That leadership is what makes this group special.”

Building speed and endurance

With a background in track, Roquemore has emphasized not just distance but speed development.

“Last year the team focused a lot on mileage,” Roquemore explained. “This year, we’ve been balancing that with speed work. The guys have really bought into it, and it’s already paying off.”

That mix of endurance and sharper race pace has given the Mustangs a competitive edge in workouts and meets.

Goals for the season

Roquemore isn’t shy about the team’s aspirations:

“Our goal this year is to win a district title,” he said. “The girls have brought home a few recently, and now it’s the boys’ turn. With the effort and consistency our seniors are showing, I believe we can get there.”

Daily accountability and intensity in workouts have fueled progress. “Our seniors are doing a great job motivating the younger guys to step their game up,” Roquemore noted.

Runners to watch

Memorial returned a strong group of experienced athletes ready to lead:

  • Stefano Ferrier, Sr. – A key veteran who sets the tone in workouts and races.

  • Alex Barnstable, Sr. – A steady leader who motivates teammates and keeps traditions alive.

  • Gavin Storey, Sr. – A versatile runner contributing speed and consistency to the pack.

“These guys are not just performing - they’re leading,” Rockmore said. “They’ve been great at guiding teammates, making sure everyone is locked in, and even helping me understand the culture here as a new coach.”

Looking ahead

With seasoned leadership, improved speed, and a clear goal, Memorial continues to high.

“This team has worked hard to put themselves in position to win,” Roquemore said. “They’re not satisfied with just competing, they want to make history and bring a district title back to Memorial.”
