National PTA awards grants to Pine Shadows Elementary and Northbrook High PTAs for STEM and digital safety programs

Recently, the PTAs at Pine Shadows Elementary and Northbrook High were each awarded a $1,000 grant to support their school's STEM and digital safety initiatives from National PTA.

"National PTA had a call for schools to apply for grants, and as a council, we encouraged our local PTAs to apply," said Dominique Harvey, Spring Branch ISD Council of PTAs president. "We are so glad that they applied! They are both first-time recipients of National PTA grants."

Pine Shadows Elementary's PTA is excited to see the grant in action as part of the school's STEM + Families Propelling Our World Program initiative. The PTA will host hands-on engineering design challenges that bring families and students together with the resources they need while helping students explore activities and careers in STEM. The grant is sponsored by Huntington Ingalls Industries.

"Family and community engagement greatly increases the likelihood that students will learn and thrive," added Harvey. "Students are more prepared for school, more likely to achieve great things and more likely to graduate on time when they are supported by schools, families and communities working together."

Students exploring careers early in their education reinforces SBISD's T-2-4 vision, where every graduate attains a technical certificate, military training, or a two-year or four-year degree.

Northbrook High received the Discord Grant, which aims to facilitate meaningful discussions between teenagers and their caregivers about digital dilemmas related to community and belonging. The program hopes to create a healthier digital ecosystem by helping families explore the use of technology as a communication tool while also discussing ways to foster positive relationships and build belonging in the digital world.

Initiatives like this reinforce SBISD's Family Education, Engagement and Empowerment Framework (Family E3), which ensures schools partner with families to promote student achievement.
