Spring Branch ISD Trustees met Tuesday evening to canvass results from the Saturday, May 3, election and to elect Board officers for the coming year. A canvass verifies that votes were correctly counted during the election.
Sworn-in as new Trustees were Jennifer Hyland, in Position 5, and Walker Agnew, Jr. in Position 6. Incumbent Caroline H Bennett was re-elected to a second term in Position 7. Each board member serves a three-year term.
Hyland defeated Diana Martinez Alexander with 5,766 votes to Alexander’s 3,138 votes. Agnew received 5,044 votes, defeating J. Steven Smelley who received 674 votes and David Enrique López who received 3,281 votes. Bennet earned 5,067 votes to Juan Jose Reyes’ 1,540 votes and Patricia Cabrera who received 2,280 votes.
The new trustees were joined at the ceremony by family, friends and supporters.
The Board of Trustees also elects new officers annually after new members are sworn in.
Newly elected Board officers are Trustee Shannon Mahan, who replaces Lisa Andrews Alpe as Board President; Trustee Caroline H. Bennett, who replaces Courtney Anderson as Vice-President; and Trustee Walker Agnew, Jr., who replaces Shannon Mahan as Secretary.
The $631.5 million 2025 bond referendum (Propositions A, B, C and D) also was canvassed during the meeting. The canvass of votes affirmed Propositions A, B and C totaling $558.6 million were approved by SBISD voters.
Proposition A passed with 5,145 votes in favor of the proposition, versus 4,020 votes against. Proposition B passed with 4,622 votes in favor of the proposition, versus 4,532 votes against, and Proposition C passed with 4,746 votes in favor of the proposition, versus 4,397 against. Proposition D failed to pass, with 4,131 votes in favor of the proposition, vs 5,006 against.
The bond program approved with the passage of Propositions A, B and C will address needed athletics facilities improvements at the district’s four comprehensive high schools and at Darrell Tully Stadium and Don Coleman Coliseum. The bond program will also address the rebuilding and relocation of the W.W. Emmons Natatorium.
