New to the team, Ready to serve: Albert Nicholson

The sun rises early over the Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) Transportation Center during the summer—and so do the people who keep the district rolling.

While students and teachers enjoy a well-deserved break, a dedicated team of transportation professionals works hard to ensure the district is ready for the first day of school. Their efforts reflect the SBISD commitment to Every child. Every way. Every minute. Every day. From training future drivers to fueling the fleet, this summer’s work is more than maintenance—it’s mission-critical. Let’s meet a few of the people working diligently this summer to be ready for Day One of the 2025–26 school year.

New to the team, Ready to serve

Albert Nicholson joined Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) just one year ago, but his impact is already clear. After earning his commercial driver’s license (CDL) through the Transportation Department’s in-house training program, Nicholson now supports the fueling team during the summer—ensuring that every bus is ready to roll on day one.

Nicholson came to SBISD from the aviation industry, motivated by a desire to learn more about transportation. It was an easy decision to return to the district where he was raised and now has children enrolled. The training program offered Nicholson a major advantage. CDL training is often costly through private providers, but SBISD’s paid training model made the career shift more accessible. Even more valuable, the trainers—his future coworkers—were personally invested in his success.

The Transportation Department provides more than just driving instruction. Initial and ongoing training also focus on student management and the safe operation of commercial vehicles. Nicholson developed both technical skills and a deeper understanding of the patience required to serve students and safely navigate the road—skills that go well beyond the steering wheel.

Summer work: Maintaining vital parts

To ensure the Transportation fleet is ready for the first day of the 2025–26 school year, Nicholson is working with the fueling team this summer. The team evaluates and maintains fluid systems for every bus, including fuel, oil, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid. These critical maintenance tasks help keep engines in peak condition and ensure buses meet safety and performance standards.

A rolling role model

During the school year, Nicholson drives regular bus routes—and he especially enjoys building relationships with the students he transports. Offering a consistent and supportive presence, he often serves as a role model along the way. Nicholson sees his work in transportation as a meaningful way to contribute to the well-being of every child, aligning directly with SBISD’s Core Values. The opportunity to support education while pursuing a rewarding career path is what first brought him to SBISD—and what keeps him motivated for the future.

Return on investment

Nicholson’s journey is a powerful example of what’s possible when a district invests in its people. From a student in SBISD to a vital member of its workforce, he represents the full-circle potential of homegrown talent. SBISD not only prepares the workforce of tomorrow—it welcomes that talent back and helps it thrive.
