Northbrook Showcases Talent in Bregman Cares Classic

Northbrook High School took the field at Constellation Field on Feb. 7, embracing a rare opportunity to compete in a Minor League-caliber setting during the Bregman Cares Classic.

The event, hosted by the Bregman Cares Foundation in partnership with the Astros Foundation and the Space Cowboys, provided four Title I high schools the chance to showcase their skills in front of six top junior college programs.

The Raiders faced off against Terry High School, a familiar opponent with whom they have scrimmaged in previous years. Northbrook head coach Daniel Steffen expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.

"It's a great experience," Steffen said. "We've scrimmaged them for the past couple of years, so we have a good relationship with them. We threw our name in the hat to get picked, and this event is a great opportunity for our kids, who probably never get to play on a big-league field like this. We were fortunate to get picked, and here we are playing."

The atmosphere among the team was electric from the start, with players eager to soak in the experience of playing in a professional stadium.

"It was great," Steffen said. "We got some breakfast for them this morning, so their bellies were full, their eyes were nice and wide, and they showed up ready to play. We had a great time. The boys loved it. Everyone was able to play a little, which was good. Good memories for all the boys—it was a great time."

Looking ahead to the season, Northbrook is leaning on an experienced senior class to lead the team.

"We're senior-heavy this year, so we've got a lot of seniors who've been with us for a long time," Steffen said. "It's good to see them play and be a part of this program for four years. We're looking forward to it. We've got a couple of young bucks who are playing, and we expect a lot out of them. But we've got good character kids, too, which makes it easier on me to coach them."

For Northbrook, the Bregman Cares Classic was about more than just competition—it was a chance to create lasting memories and gain exposure in front of collegiate scouts.

"We're all smiles here," Steffen said.
