Nottingham Elementary groundbreaking ceremony inspires community

Proud Spring Branch ISD students, staff, civic leaders and community members gathered on Wednesday, Feb. 9 to celebrate the groundbreaking and planned construction of the new Nottingham Elementary. The 106,265 square-foot building will be built on-site, adjacent to the current 58,385 square-foot building, which opened its doors in 1969.

With a great turnout, the groundbreaking ceremony proved to be a standing-room-only event.

After introductions from SBISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Blaine, attendees were treated to a robust program, including a captivating musical performance by the Nottingham Elementary Choir and an applause-inspiring routine by the Nottingham Elementary Dazzlers Dance Team.

“Nottingham Elementary has served as a centerpiece for the three neighborhoods that feed into it,” Nottingham parent and SBISD Bond Advisory Committee member Tom DeBesse said. “It’s a gathering place for families. It’s where our children learn. To have it built new and upgraded with the technology that we need, it’s a dream come true.”

The rebuilt school will serve 750 students. In addition, the design's aesthetic and functional upgrades will give students and staff an exceptional learning environment.

“It’s a new learning environment that will inspire our students and our teachers,” Nottingham Elementary PTA President Linda Dang said.

A large, open library will serve as the heart of the school, and collaborative areas adjacent to the classrooms will have flexible furniture and active walls to support learning for individual or multi-class use outside the classrooms.

“These new exciting opportunities for our students mean everything,” Nottingham Elementary Principal Becky Hagan said. “We’re really excited, and we can’t wait to get into our new space.”

The Nottingham Elementary rebuild is part of the 2017 Bond Program approved by 80 percent of the vote and continues the transformation of district facilities that began with the 2007 Bond Program.
