I Am SBISD Recognition: Board honors two outstanding staff members

At this month’s regular meeting, trustees honored two outstanding members of the SBISD family as I AM SBISD Award recipients: Lt. Michael Fleming and Associate Superintendent Karen Heeth.

The I AM SBISD Award recognizes individuals who exemplify The Spring Branch Way—our five Core Values that guide how we serve, lead, and support every member of our community.

Lt. Michael Fleming, SBISD Police Department, was recognized for his vision and leadership in launching the Caught You Reading initiative at our elementary schools. His idea to connect literacy with campus police officers has created a fun way to encourage reading and build positive relationships. Dr. Annie Wolfe shared remarks celebrating the program’s impact and thanking Lt. Fleming for his creativity and partnership with Academics.

Karen Heeth, Associate Superintendent for Talent and Administration, was honored for her exceptional service and upcoming retirement after 27 years with SBISD. Dr. Jennifer Blaine reflected on Heeth’s steady leadership, deep instructional expertise, and transformative work, ranging from science instruction to COVID protocols to building innovative talent pipelines that strengthened our district culture. Dr. Gary Henry joined in recognizing her collaborative spirit and the lasting legacy she leaves across SBISD.

Both honorees represent the very best of who we are as a district. They are leaders who model our Core Values and make SBISD a stronger, more connected community for Every Child. To view a recording of the board meeting, click here.
