Posse Finalists move on to the next round of interviews for a chance to earn a full-tuition scholarship
 

 

 

Being nominated for the prestigious Posse Foundation Scholarship by your high school counselor is a distinct honor. Each year, guidance counselors across Spring Branch ISD are proud to submit to the Foundation names of seniors who have demonstrated remarkable leadership and scholastic strengths during their high school careers.

Students nominated for the Posse Foundation Scholarship program in Houston go through a series of interviews for the possibility to be selected for full-tuition scholarships to one of 5 four-year partner universities across the country.

The initial phase of the Posse selection process is a group interview with Foundation representatives. From that interview, those moving on to the next round become semi-finalists. Students in this group have individual interviews, through which the field narrows to 20 to 25 finalists. 

One step closer

For eight Spring Branch ISD seniors, the journey to be selected as a Posse Scholar is one step closer to becoming a reality. The next phase, in December, involves interviews with university officials present. Posse Scholars will be announced in January.

When chosen as a Posse Scholar, students are grouped into multicultural posses of ten, and receive pre-college coaching and support from the Posse Foundation before arriving to their designated campuses. Guidance and mentoring continue throughout the students’ post-secondary journey with weekly gatherings to discuss the challenges (and solutions) of college life, provide assistance with making connections to a network of the schools’ support systems and grow together as a family away from home.

This kind of support is invaluable, as over 90 percent of Posse Scholars graduate from college, and go on to become the next generation of leaders in the United States.  

Exposure to a variety of perspectives continues to serve

For Katie Redd, former Posse Scholar and current Community Engagement team member in Spring Branch ISD, receiving the Posse Scholarship gave her the experience to live and work with people from all over the world with different backgrounds and perspectives.

“I’ve carried this knowledge with me into my career,” said Redd. “Knowing how to work with people from all different backgrounds is vital to the work I do, creating partnerships and supporting programs throughout the district.”

SBISD is thankful to the Posse Foundation for the opportunities to recognize many stellar nominees who embody the district’s Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Ready Graduate.

Students in SBISD are encouraged to apply for a myriad of college scholarships available nationally and locally. Some scholarships are even open to students as early as ninth grade.
