PSAT Provides Early Access to College Pathways

Mark your calendar! The PSAT is coming to SBISD on October 10.

SBISD offers a district-funded, school day PSAT to grades 8-11. This district-funded prep test is an excellent primer for students planning on taking the SAT and/or ACT. The PSAT is a two-hour test given once a year in October. Many students take the PSAT, not only as preparation for the SAT taken in the junior and senior years and widely used as a significant benchmark for college admissions, but also to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Competition.

The PSAT has two sections. Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. All 8th and 9th graders will take the PSAT 8/9, and 10th and 11th graders take the PSAT/NMSQT.  Students with strong scores may substitute their PSAT test for Algebra I and/or English I End-of-Course assessments.

Eighth graders not in Algebra I or English I can retain their eligible substitute assessment(s) for use next year.  Students in 11th grade may qualify for national merit consideration.

The goal of the District’s strategic plan, Spring Branch T-2-4, challenges the system to increase the number of students completing a technical certificate or military training, two-year or four-year degree from 44 percent to 72 percent by 2022. For many students, the PSAT is a critical step for early access to college and post-secondary pathways planning.

All students will also receive useful information and resources from the College Board in preparation for college entrance exams.
