Pumpkin Fun Run Promotes Health

Hundreds of students and family members gathered in bright sunshine and fall temperatures on Saturday, Oct. 27, to celebrate the re-start of the annual Great Pumpkin Fun Run at Cedar Brook Elementary School.

Funds raised from the health and community event will assist in the purchase of a new sound system for the school gym and cafeteria.

Almost 300 students, joined by many more family supporters, participated in the outdoor fun run, which was supported by the district Health Fitness Dept. and Coordinated School Health Advisory Committee.

Spring Woods High School’s girls and boys cross-country teams helped with event set up, student participation and tear down.

During the past five years, the Great Pumpkin Fun Run has grown into a great community-wide gathering, staff members and families report. Due to Harvey, however, last year’s event was not held. All were excited to be back this year.

“I’ve helped with the Great Pumpkin Fun Run since its inception. The time and effort that are put into it are amazing,” said Cedar Brook art teacher Maria Casares.

“It is so well organized and has gotten better each year. My favorite thing about it is that we’ve got prekindergarten students participating, as well as grandparents of Cedar Brook Elementary students. It is a great, community-wide event,” she also said.

Jennifer Perroni, a former parent and PTA president, raved about the gathering.

“Outstanding, purposeful, engaging and well run, deserving of standing ovation and a round of applause! I was sad we couldn’t have it last year due to Harvey,” she said.

“My favorite part of the Great Pumpkin Fun Run was getting to run with my dad,” kindergarten student Hugo Castillo said.

Fifth-grade teacher Maria Amaya said the run is a neat, family-oriented event.

“It gets our students interested in exercising with friends and family and is set up like a 5K, providing bagels, bananas and bottles of water at the end. I love seeing all of the smiling faces throughout the event and the kids love showing off their pumpkins. Having the Spring Woods High Cross Country teams help out this year was just icing on the cake,” she said.

Cedar Brook Health Fitness teacher Courtney Roberts said great weather was key, and the high school cross-country teams provided a huge help.

“There were close to 300 participants and many more spectators. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the fun run is a great way to kick off the fall season in a healthy way,” she said.
