Raiders celebrate Class of 2026 on the RISE

It was a night to remember at Northbrook High School (NHS) as the campus marked a defining moment for its RISE College Academy program.

The first graduating class was recognized for setting a new standard. Every student in this inaugural cohort has earned an associate degree before high school graduation. In May, they will take the stage at Don Coleman Community Coliseum (DCC) with their classmates, already holding a college credential as they receive their diploma.

The evening honored both the work and the people behind it. "I am incredibly proud of our RISE scholars," said school principal HP Hyde III. "Their journey reflects resilience, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence that has resulted in an outstanding achievement - earning their associate's degree while in high school.  They have already defied the odds, and I know their future will be limitless."

Students and families reflected on how far the cohort has come. Jennifer Blaine, members of the Board of Trustees, district leaders, and NHS teachers shared their pride and encouragement for what lies ahead. Tyra Walker, SBISD Executive Director Postsecondary Outcomes, Counseling and Responsive Services, reminded students of the significance of their accomplishment. "As the first cohort, your place in the program’s history is set. No one else will hold that distinction," said Walker.

One of the most meaningful moments of the evening brought the program full circle. Students who were pinned when they first committed to RISE passed their pins to someone who made a difference in their journey. It was a powerful tribute to the relationships that supported their success.

Families filled the room with energy and celebration, cheering on students as they reached this milestone. In the coming days, they will walk alongside their Houston City College (HCC) peers to receive their associate degree. Later in May, they will walk again at SBISD graduation to receive their high school diploma.

The RISE College Academy program at NHS is one of two college academy opportunities in the district, alongside the program at Spring Woods High School (SWHS). Together, they reflect a clear commitment to preparing students for what is next.

This first cohort has done more than graduate. They have opened the door for those who follow.
