SBISD Board spotlights Dyslexia Awareness Month

As October approaches, the SBISD Board of Trustees is proud to spotlight Dyslexia Awareness Month, raising awareness of the most common learning difference affecting one in five children.

“Every Child has a story, and it’s our responsibility to make sure that story includes the support and tools they need to succeed,” said Board Member Jennifer Hyland. “This month reminds us of the importance of early identification and intervention so students with dyslexia can thrive.”

Dyslexia often hides in plain sight. Students may be bright, articulate, and creative, yet still struggle with reading and writing in ways that can puzzle parents and teachers. Warning signs can show up at every stage of a child’s journey:

  • In early years: delayed speech, trouble with rhyming, or difficulty learning the alphabet
  • In elementary: slow, labored reading, poor spelling, or avoidance of reading aloud
  • In older grades: disorganized written work, trouble with sequences, or fatigue from the extra effort needed to keep up

The good news is that with early identification and the right support, students with dyslexia can achieve academic success and reach their full potential. Research shows that when intervention begins in kindergarten or first grade, nine out of ten students can reach grade-level reading.

SBISD remains committed to providing comprehensive services, tools, and encouragement for students with dyslexia and their families. This year, we are proud to share Every Child Has a Story, a special video featuring classroom highlights and heartfelt testimonials from students and parents who benefit from SBISD’s services and support.
