SBISD celebrates topping out of new Guthrie Center

Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) recently celebrated a major milestone in its 2022 Bond Program with the topping out of the new Guthrie Center, the district’s future career and technology hub set to open in 2026.

A time-honored tradition in construction, topping out marks the moment when the highest steel beam is placed atop a building. Traditionally adorned with a tree to symbolize growth, good luck, and a strong foundation for the future, the ceremony reflects the promise of what is to come — a fitting tribute to a center that will soon help thousands of SBISD students launch their careers. For this milestone, the American flag was proudly displayed in place of the tree, honoring both tradition and the spirit of opportunity the new center represents.

"This is such an exciting moment for SBISD and our community," said Travis Stanford, SBISD associate superintendent for operations. "Every beam and every wall going up brings us closer to opening the doors to a world-class career and technology center that will inspire and empower our students."

Joe Kolenda, principal of the Guthrie Center, echoed the excitement. "To see this dream start to take shape in such a real way is incredible. We can’t wait to welcome students to a new place that will continue Guthrie's vision by opening doors to their futures and helping them build skills that will last a lifetime," he said.

Funded through the voter-approved 2022 bond, the new Guthrie Center will expand access to industry certifications, dual-credit opportunities, and hands-on learning experiences across a wide range of high-demand career fields.

As construction moves into its next phase, excitement continues to build for what will soon become one of the premier career and technical education facilities in the region.
