SBISD Educator Honored at State Teacher of the Year Event

Memorial High School journalism instructor Holly Hartman was among a select group of teachers honored during the annual Texas Teacher of the Year awards luncheon held on Sept. 14 at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.

In August, Hartman was named Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year during a special ceremony held at the Region 4 Education Service Center. Joining Hartman was Region 4 Elementary Teacher of Year Jeanna Peña with the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Both women were honored during the Austin luncheon as regional winners.

SBISD’s Teacher of the Year winners, Hartman and Frostwood Elementary School librarian Heather Bothe, were both named Region 4 Teacher of the Year finalists, placing among the area’s top 10 teachers. Region 4 includes a seven-county area that includes 50 public school districts.

Sponsored by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA), the Teacher of the Year luncheon in Austin included naming of the state’s top elementary and secondary teachers for 2019.

Rhonda Peña, a fifth-grade mathematics teacher from Mission CISD, was named the 2019 Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Jeff Wheatcraft, an eighth-grade science teacher from Alamo Heights ISD, was named the 2019 Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year. He will also represent the state in the upcoming National Teacher of the Year competition.

Both state-level winners received a cash award and a commemorative trophy.
