SBISD November Athletics Spotlight: Olivia Zurek

What sport do you participate in and why did you decide to begin participating?

In 8th grade, I play volleyball at Memorial Middle School. Outside of school, I play club volleyball, club lacrosse, and swim for Memorial Forest Club.

What do you like most about participating in athletics at Memorial Middle School?

It is a fun way to spend my free time. I like the camaraderie and new friends I make on various teams. It’s also more practice for club volleyball.

What Core Characteristic(s) have you developed most by being part of your sport?

The first SBISD Core Characteristic I would pick is Communicator & Collaborator, especially as a setter of a volleyball team. I not only have to communicate on every play with the hitters to win points, but also with defense to predict opponent responses and to make sure we cover the court.

The second SBISD Core Characteristic I think is important is being Academically Prepared. With multiple sports, volunteering, family and church activities, as well as my schoolwork—I need to make sure I remain a student-athlete, as opposed to an athlete-student. It has been a challenge some weeks, but helps prepare me for high school, where things will get harder, and I will have even more responsibilities.

How has your coach helped you or inspired you in the sport?

Over the last two years, both my 7th and 8th-grade volleyball coaches helped me improve. Last year Coach Green truly believed in me, and it gave me confidence to be the best setter I could be for my team and myself. This year, Coach Jackson taught us how to face adversity and rise to the challenge in some very close games.

What has been your favorite moment(s) as a student-athlete at Memorial Middle School?

Imagine a championship volleyball game in the district tournament between Memorial Middle and Spring Branch Middle. We are down by a few points in the tie-breaking third set. Our team rose to the occasion, rallied several points in row, and pulled out the win for the championship! It was a great team effort!

How do you think participating in athletics will prepare you for high school?

I am learning how important it is to prioritize schoolwork and balance a busy schedule with my sports. It can be hard to do both, but it is fun and rewarding.

Most team environments sharpen my leadership and communication skills. All teams give me experience in meeting a stranger, who becomes an awesome teammate and a friend by the end of the season. So, in sports, I am always learning how to meet new people, which I think is a great skill to have.

Sports offer me good opportunities to learn how to deal with high-stress situations. I realize I will have many of these in high school, with my quizzes, tests, etc. Sports have prepared me in this way.

Which high school will you attend?

Memorial High School

Will you participate in this sport and/or others in high school?

I plan to continue participating in multiple sports at Memorial High School because I love the competition, friendships and life lessons sports offer around winning, losing, and teamwork.
