Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation (BBHLF).
This collaboration marks a milestone, with SBISD teachers receiving comprehensive Science of Reading in Action (SORIA) kits this year. This collaboration seeks to enhance literacy instruction across the district by incorporating evidence-based strategies to improve reading and writing skills among young learners.
The SORIA resources from BBHLF further bolster the district’s structured literacy priority for elementary education. This partnership, alongside new sound walls from the 95 Percent Group and ongoing training with Texas Reads, continues to offer SBISD teachers and leaders timely support for delivering high-quality instruction.
Renee Mendez, a first-grade teacher at Westwood Elementary, in her 28th year of teaching with renewed enthusiasm thanks to the new resources. “The revamped curriculum and the incredible support truly excite me,” Mendez said. “I believe these tools will empower our educators to better support students as they continue to excel and advance, building on the significant improvements we've seen in their literacy achievements over the past years.”
Mendez also encourages parents to explore the Science of Reading, a research-based approach designed to significantly enhance literacy skills. For more information, parents can visit the SBISD Literacy page on the district’s website, under the Families and Students section.
“I am grateful for the district's commitment to our students and their success,” Mendez added. “Our goal is to support and enrich our students’ learning experiences.”
