SBISD Police Department Launches “Caught You Reading!”

Officers from the Spring Branch ISD Police Department are trading citations for smiles this fall as they launch Caught You Reading!, a new literacy initiative aimed at inspiring young readers across the district.

Beginning in October, SBISD Police officers and their K-9 partners will patrol elementary campuses on the lookout for a positive kind of “offense”: students caught reading. Instead of warnings or tickets, these lucky students will receive official Caught You Reading! “tickets” that enter them into a monthly prize drawing.

At the heart of the campaign is Don, SBISD’s official “Literacy Pup on Patrol.” The mascot carries a special legacy — he is named in honor of one of the department’s beloved K-9s who passed away after many years of loyal service.

“This program allows our officers to connect with students in a positive and encouraging way,” said Larry Baimbridge, Chief of Police for SBISD. “Naming our Literacy Pup after Don is a way to honor his service while inspiring a new generation of readers. We want students to see law enforcement as allies in their success — and what better way to do that than by celebrating the joy of reading?”

Each month, winning students will be treated to a special reading session with SBISD Police officers and Don, the Literacy Pup. Officers and their K-9 partners will join winners on campus to celebrate their love of books.

Lobby posters promoting the campaign will be displayed in schools, and digital resources are available for families through PeachJar.
