SBISD Principals Share News Spotlights

Two SBISD school principals were selected by local television news programs this week for separate recognition as strong educational leaders.

Featured were Principal Roy Moore of Nottingham Elementary School and Spring Forest Middle School Principal Raymorris Barnes.

Principal Roy Moore, Nottingham Elementary School

On Tuesday afternoon, Nottingham Elementary School Principal Roy Moore was part of a nationally televised town hall broadcast sponsored by NBC News Learn, the education-focused division of national NBC News.

The special broadcast aired on KPRC-TV2 and was livestreamed by NBC News. It was held at the University of Houston-Downtown and included a live audience, which queried special speakers.

Principal Moore appeared on a panel discussion moderated by NBC News Chief Education Correspondent Rehema Ellis. The panel was titled “Stronger than the Storm: How do schools move forward?”

That panel discussion focused on Hurricane Harvey, which hit soon after SBISD’s schools opened for the 2017-18 school year. Thousands of students across area school districts were displaced from their homes or schools due to flooding.

The Nottingham campus was not damaged, but hundreds of local neighborhood students and families were flooded out of their homes.

Principal Moore, joined by an area school superintendent and experts in child psychology and counseling, spoke about the trauma experienced after such a disastrous event.

In the storm’s aftermath, the principal noted that Nottingham teachers, staff and counselors worked together so that student mental health and child relationships were top priorities, rather than academics and curriculum.

In separate news, the district’s 3-year-old partnership with TRIO Electric to train student apprentices as commercial electricians was also highlighted at the news show.

Principal Raymorris Barnes, Spring Forest Middle School

A KHOU-TV 11 Great Day Houston news show team surprised Spring Forest Middle School Principal Raymorris Barnes early this week, issuing an Ashley HomeStore “Red Apple Award” to him for strong campus leadership.

The Great Day Houston show is hosted by Deborah Duncan. SBISD Superintendent Jennifer Blaine, Ed.D., attended the surprise campus event on Monday, Sept. 23.

The Red Apple Award honors outstanding educators. Principal Barnes reportedly was the first principal to receive the award; previous winners were all teachers.

Along with his recognition, Principal Barnes received a $250 Ashley Furniture gift card; Spring Forest Middle has also received a $2,500 store voucher for teachers lounge furniture and upgrades.

Principal Barnes was nominated for the award by parents Kara and Keith Irvine.

A TV segment featuring Principal Barnes is now scheduled to be broadcast on the morning feature news show on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Great Day Houston show airs locally at 9 a.m. daily on KHOU-TV 11.

Principal Barnes has led Spring Forest Middle for three years. He joined SBISD in 2011 after teaching and coaching in Pearland ISD. He worked several years as a grade-level principal at Northbrook High School and as a district administrator. A Biloxi, Miss., native, he holds bachelor and master’s degrees from Rice University.
