SBISD Students Earn More AP Scholar Awards

Spring Branch ISD is proud to announce that 791 students earned recognition as Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars during the 2017-18 school year through The College Board.

In the previous reporting year, SBISD had a total of 623 AP Scholars, a year-over-year increase of 168 student award winners.

The College Board’s AP Program offers academically prepared students an option to take rigorous, college-level courses while still in high school, and to win college credit, advanced standing, or both for successful performance on AP Exams.

The College Board determines award winners based on student AP Exam scores. A student’s average AP Exam score is calculated based on all such exams taken, with The College Board determining which scores correspond with four separate award categories.

In 2017, SBISD had 68 students named as National AP Scholars, the award issued to U.S. students who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, with scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of the exams.

The College Board’s highest possible AP Exam score is 5.

Two National AP Scholars are Memorial High School seniors this school year, with that high school supporting 58 National AP Scholars. Stratford High was home for 10 National AP Scholars in the last reporting period.

SBISD high schools, meanwhile, supported a total 281 AP Scholars with Distinction award winners. This distinction is given to students who earn an average score of 3.5 on all AP Exams taken.

In addition, SBISD campuses had 113 AP Scholars with Honor recognized for those who earned 3.25 on all AP Exams, and 329 AP Scholars honored for earning scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.

Interestingly, one honored district AP Scholar last year was a ninth-grader who scored top scores of 5 in three exams after taking AP Calculus, AP Statistics and AP World History during the past two years.

In general, students earn college credits or advanced placement standing at U.S. colleges or universities for AP Exam scores of 3 or higher, depending on specific institutional policies.
