SBISD's School Nutrition Services is reshaping service

Spring Branch ISD School Nutrition Services (SNS) received recognition from the non-profit organization No Kid Hungry for its innovative pilot program aimed at eliminating childhood hunger.

The program, which introduced breakfast in the classroom using feeding stations at Pine Shadows Elementary School, was a collaborative effort between SNS and the school's staff. “Each cart holds 350 meals, and we have them stationed in four locations around the school,” said Assistant Director of School Nutrition Services Maggie Kennedy. “This is about convience and making sure kids have a great start to their day. We are here to feed kids. This is helping us to do that.”

SBISD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jennifer Blaine, highlighted the importance of healthy breakfast options in supporting academic performance and attendance during the special award ceremony. In addition, Texas State Representative Lacey Hull presented a proclamation earlier in the week to acknowledge the program's achievements.

The feeding carts enable students to select breakfast options quickly while also providing an opportunity to interact with SNS staff in an informal setting.

“It’s next level when kids have that one-on-one connection with our staff,” said SNS Director Michael Francis. “This is about changing the way we serve kids. It’s helping us to build connections in the schools. At the end of the day, those connections are critical to making sure we’re doing the work we need to do in support of Every Child.”

No Kid Hungry's commitment to eradicating childhood hunger and poverty through initiatives such as breakfast programs and emergency food assistance is crucial. To learn more about their campaign to make a difference, visit nokidhungry.org.
