SBMS Life Skills students trek to Starbucks

Rain or shine, there is learning taking place with the Life Skills students at Spring Branch Middle School.

The Spring Branch ISD students recently took a walking trip from their school to the neighborhood Starbucks, where they practiced various real-world skills learned in the classroom: how to place an order, pay for it, and make sure the correct amount of monies were exchanged.

The Community Based Instruction outing was an opportunity to put the students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) into action.

During the walk, there was a downpour, but the students and their teachers were well prepared with umbrellas.

“Sometimes rain happens,” LaShanda Chase, SBMS Life Skills teacher told her students. She also cautioned the students to look both ways when crossing the road.

Once they arrived at the store, students ordered Frappuccino’s and Starbucks drinks of varying flavors. “I want a strawberry Frap,” said one student with practiced confidence.

As orders were ready, the students’ names were called out, and they retrieved the refreshments with senses of accomplishment.

“Look, there is your name right there,” said Life Skills teacher John Kenna as he pointed out the order sticker placed on the bag containing Carter’s confetti cookie. A big smile shined when the student recognized his name on the label.

All of the practiced skills were in evidence as the students enjoyed their visit to Starbucks, as well as the real-world refreshments!
