Navigating Social Media Safely: When to Report and Seek Help

As we begin another school year, the importance of social media safety remains the top priority for both our students and families. While many social media platforms are blocked for students on the district network the reality is that many students use social media when away from the school building. Our goal is to ensure that everyone in the SBISD community understands how to navigate these platforms safely and knows when to report concerning online activities.

Social Media Safety Tips

  1. Privacy Settings: Ensure that your social media accounts have strong privacy settings. This helps control who can view your posts and personal information.
  2. Personal Information: Avoid sharing sensitive personal information online. This includes details like your address, phone number, or financial information.
  3. Strangers Online: Be cautious when interacting with people you do not know personally. Scammers and malicious individuals often exploit social media for nefarious purposes.
  4. Cyberbullying: If you encounter or witness cyberbullying, it’s crucial to address it promptly. Encourage open communication with your children about their online interactions and remind them to report any harassment or threats they experience.

When to Report Online Activities

If you or someone you know encounters any of the following situations online, it’s essential to report them to the appropriate authorities:

  1. Threats of Violence: Any threats or acts of violence should be reported immediately to law enforcement.
  2. Suspicious Behavior: If you notice any suspicious or illegal activity online, including potential scams or predatory behavior, report it to local authorities and online platforms.
  3. Mental Health Crises: If someone is experiencing a mental health crisis and is posting distressing content online, reach out to mental health professionals or crisis hotlines. In the SBISD community, you can use our anonymous reporting link available on all school websites to alert authorities and campus staff members discreetly.

Anonymous Reporting

We want to remind families that each school website within the SBISD district includes an anonymous reporting link. This tool allows students, parents, and community members to report any suspicious or criminal activities confidentially. Your safety and the safety of our students are paramount, and this reporting system is a crucial component in maintaining a secure environment.
