Shear determination: Diana Guevara

Diana Guevara, a recent graduate of Spring Woods High School (SWHS) in Spring Branch ISD (SBISD), never expected to pursue a career in cutting and styling hair — but that is the path she is taking thanks to the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.

“I never imagined myself going into this industry, but you have to find a place in the world, and I’m grateful to SBISD for helping me find mine,” she said.

Once she immersed herself in the SBISD cosmetology program, there was no turning back. Her experiences including salon nights where teachers, their children, and community members came in for haircuts and blowouts helped solidify her love for the transformative nature of the work.

“I love to color hair; it really has become a passion. I like the change it can make and the boost of confidence it can give someone,” Guevara said.

Her cosmetology teachers recognized her talent for cutting and styling hair and encouraged her to pursue not only her cosmetology license but her barber’s license as well.

“It was a lot of studying. Besides the time spent in class, I spent extra time after school to learn so that I could gain a real understanding of the concepts,” she said. “But it was worth it.”

In less than a year, Diana successfully obtained both licenses, showcasing her drive, curiosity, and commitment to providing clients with a full range of services from precise cuts and fades to coloring, styling and chemical treatments.

Diana’s journey in the CTE program was more than just learning a skill; it was about finding a path. “I think it’s great that the district offers this opportunity. It’s free, and you have the chance to learn from professionals.”

Support from her family has also played a key role. Her mom, sister, brother and uncle let her practice cutting and styling their hair, giving her more hands-on experience and confidence.

Looking ahead, Diana plans to gain experience in a salon before eventually starting her own business. Her long-term goal is entrepreneurship, blending the skills she has learned with her passion for helping people look and feel their best.

“Finding this industry was unexpected,” Guevara said, “but it feels right. I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me.”
