Sherwood Elementary students highlight service with daily flag-raising ceremony

As the Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) gets ready for its annual Veterans Day celebrations on November 11, students at Sherwood Elementary are showing their service-minded spirit and gratitude for those who have served in the armed forces.

Each morning at 7:00 AM, a trio of fifth graders— David Torres, Dante Guevara and Donovan Zelaya Torres —take part in a flag-raising ceremony that symbolizes the values represented by the American flag, all made possible by the sacrifices of veterans.

Thanks to the guidance of school counselor, Kala McKnight, the students have made the flag-raising a meaningful part of their daily routine. This practice aligns with the district’s Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Ready Graduate, which focus on cultivating traits like integrity, responsibility, and civic engagement.

“It’s important for us to honor those who have served,” David said, as they prepared for their morning routine. “Raising the flag makes me feel proud of our school.”

Dante added, “I love how we get to do this together. It shows how much we care about our heroes.” Donovan added, “It reminds everyone that we are all united.”

The students’ dedication has inspired their classmates to engage more actively in honoring veterans and fostered a strong sense of community among Sherwood’s students.

“I am incredibly proud of the leadership our students have demonstrated,” said Principal Sarah Salas. “The service-minded spirit shown by David, Dante and Donovan truly embodies the values we strive to instill in all our students—integrity, responsibility, and respect for each other and our community. It’s essential to teach our students the importance of supporting our military.”

"I’m also proud of our Eagles," added campus counselor McKnight. "They are honoring our school by exemplifying leadership and collaboration. Their efforts are truly inspiring."

As the community gears up for Veterans Day, the flag at Sherwood proudly flies, serving as a daily reminder of our gratitude. Through their heartfelt dedication, these Sherwood Eagles not only honor our veterans but also inspire their peers to recognize the significance of service in their own lives.
