Students in the SPIRAL Program at Bendwood Elementary recently took center stage to pitch their innovative product ideas to a panel of “Sharks,” seeking investment in exchange for a stake in their companies.
The showcase highlighted an impressive array of ideas, including a Smart Crib system that bridges technology and parent care, and the Cuckoo Clock, a calendar-alarm hybrid designed to assist users with forgetfulness or busy schedules.
Each school year, approximately 200 products are presented during this unique event, with nearly 2,000 ideas pitched since its launch. The event ties into the “A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned” curriculum, which teaches students essential principles of economics, investing, and smart spending habits. The process begins with students identifying a real-world problem or market gap. From there, they brainstorm solutions, develop prototypes, and refine their business strategies before stepping into the “tank.” Much like the popular TV show Shark Tank, presentations include a compelling backstory, product design concepts, manufacturing costs, and pricing models.
“I truly enjoy seeing the creativity students bring to Shark Tank. They apply classroom concepts in unique and practical ways, using the design-thinking process to refine their ideas,” classroom teacher Taylor Hayes shares. “It’s exciting to watch their concepts evolve from initial sketches to fully developed solutions. Equally rewarding is seeing their critical thinking grow as they evaluate their ideas, address challenges, and think through real-world applications.”
This hands-on experience offers more than a lesson in creativity. It challenges students to step outside their comfort zones and refine key life skills like public speaking, collaboration, and critical thinking. By exploring the world of business and entrepreneurship, students gain invaluable insights into problem-solving, market dynamics, and innovation.
Events like these are a key part of fostering the Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Graduate, preparing students to achieve their T-2-4 goals.
By emphasizing real-world skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking, these experiences go beyond academic knowledge to cultivate critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities. They empower students to dream big, embrace challenges, and develop the practical skills necessary to succeed in both their academic journeys and future careers. In doing so, they are equipped not only to meet but to exceed the expectations of the T-2-4 pathway, ensuring they are ready for success in an ever-changing world.
