Spring Branch ISD Cross Country: 2022-23 Season Spotlight

Memorial High School Mustangs

Mustang Cross Country off to a dominant start

So far, Mustang Cross Country has been improving on their performances week after week. The team has competed at meets at Pearland, Sealy and Kingwood high schools and have done well at each.

“Both of the teams, boys and girls, are devoted to the concept of team,” said Head Coach Russell Wichmann. “They support each other daily and that teamwork is paying dividends now.”

Coming up, the Mustangs are looking forward to running in the Seven Lakes Showcase. This will be their first 5K meet and a true test to what they could do in other district and postseason meets.

The goal for this team is to improve each week, also to finish in the top three at the district meet, qualifying them for regionals. Once at regionals, they want to finish in the top four so that they qualify for  state.

The Mustangs will compete at the District 17-6A meet on Oct. 11, 2022 at Spring Creek Park, 15012 Brown Road in Tomball, TX.

The 2022-23 season has been full of fun and excitement for the Northbrook Raiders. Head Boys Coach David Kuti noted that he is getting to know the student-athletes more and more daily, and most of them are already achieving their early season goals. Head Girls Coach Jasmine Torres believes that where the team might lack in experience, they make up for in their drive to learn.

“I feel like we have a special group of kids this year that are committed to putting the work in consistently,” said Kuti. “I believe both teams can accomplish a lot and maybe even have some runners move on to the regional meet.”

So far, the girls have seen early growth opportunities at the Frio Friday Night Lights Run at Sealy High and the Napier Falls Invitational at Cy-Falls High. Moving forward, both the boys and girls teams are looking forward to the chance to run at home in the SBISD Cross Country Invitational meet on Sept. 17 at Nottingham Park, 14205 Kimberley Ln in Houston, TX.

“Our team is made up of a lot of runners that are new to the sport,” said Torres. “We’re really excited about the growth of this program and the development of our runners.”

The Raiders will compete at the District 17-6A meet on Oct. 11, 2022 at Spring Creek Park, 15012 Brown Road in Tomball, TX.

Spring Woods High School Tigers

With a united mindset, the Tigers are keeping their eyes on the district meet

Head Coach Jose Razo believes that this season is off to a great start. So far, the Tigers have competed well and brought back medals from the Cy-Woods Short Course Meet. The team also ran their season-best two-mile times at that meet.

“What makes them special is that they’re a unit,” said Razo. “Everyone is a part that works with the other and is just as important. They can accomplish anything they set out for as a team.”

Now that the performance of all runners at the Cy-Woods meet have energized the team, they are ready for their upcoming meets at Conroe Grand Oaks High, Cy-Fair High’s 4K BFND, and the SBISD Cross Country Invitational meet on Sept. 17 at Nottingham Park, 14205 Kimberley Ln in Houston, TX.

“We’re expecting to bring it at the district meet,” said Razo. “That day will be a special day for us.”

The Tigers will compete at the District 17-6A meet on Oct. 11, 2022 at Spring Creek Park, 15012 Brown Road in Tomball, TX.

Stratford High School Spartans

With endurance at the heart of this team, Stratford Cross Country began their command in early August

The Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas named Spartan Cross Country #9 in the preseason poll. Head Boys Coach Celine Markert believes that the boys team is coming together nicely and she is ready to see the progression of runs throughout the season. Head Girls Coach Lauren Drayton is excited about their strong start and hopes to continue as the season ramps up.

Currently, the boys team has one senior who has stepped up into a big leadership role. Following him are a group of juniors who are not afraid to put in effort to help lead while producing quality times during meets and practices.

“I think our team will be able to accomplish whatever they set their minds to,” said Markert. “The team is incredible and capable of earning lots of success through the season, it just takes everyone showing up to the meet with a competitive mindset on meet day.”

On the girls team, Drayton believes that this team's dedication to the sport and each other is what makes them special.

“This team supports and pushes each other in such a positive way,” said Drayton. “I believe this team can make it to the UIL 6A State Meet for the second year in a row and have some personal records along the way.”

The Spartans will compete at the District 17-6A meet on Oct. 11, 2022 at Spring Creek Park, 15012 Brown Road in Tomball, TX.
